Half a million people flee war in Somalia, UN says

NAIROBI (AlertNet) - Half a million people have fled war in Somalia this year, with hundreds dying on a perilous crossing across the Gulf of Eden to Yemen, the UN refugee agency has said.

The numbers of refugees this year are the highest since the fighting in the country resumed two years ago, according to the UNHCR, while much of the country's population needs humanitarian assistance.

Trials not yet a deterrent to rapes in Congo

NAIROBI (AlertNet) - In the year since the start of the first trial at the international war crimes court involving an alleged Congolese warlord, rape on a mass scale has continued unabated in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Thomas Lubanga, accused of training child soldiers to kill and rape, went on trial at the International Criminal Court in January and two more of his compatriots went on trial at the court on Tuesday, charged with crimes against humanity including rape and sexual slavery.

Aid workers in southern Somali town moved to Kenya

NAIROBI (AlertNet) - Aid agencies operating in southern Somalia said on Monday they had relocated 12 expatriate aid workers following a deterioration in the security situation.

Rebel group Al Shabaab controls much of southern Somalia and parts of the capital Mogadishu. The group is fighting government troops and African Union peacekeepers to impose its own harsh version of sharia law throughout Somalia.

Djibouti repatriates 40 Somali asylum seekers -UN

NAIROBI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Djibouti has forcibly sent 40 asylum seekers from Somalia back to the Somali capital Mogadishu, the United Nations refugee agency said on Wednesday.

A Dutch naval ship, the Evertsen, on anti-piracy patrols in the Red Sea, rescued the migrants crammed on a boat en route to Yemen late last month.
