SOCIAL STIGMA HELPS DRIVE PANDEMIC

General links

If you're looking for facts and figures, reports, and development of the virus by country, then go straight to the U.N. Development Programme's excellent portal for Asia Pacific.

The 2008 UNAIDS report is not broken down by regions but it has figures and trends. Or try the Asia section of the UNAIDS/WHO AIDS Epidemic Update 2007 report, which is very useful for the latest figures and trends.

AIDS Data Hub is a user-friendly new resource launched by UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO and ADB that covers data on most-at-risk populations in Asia Pacific.

Another U.N. source for facts and figures by country is the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific.

For a quick regional overview with links to country information and useful reports go to the UNAIDS Asia page.

AIDS ASIA is a moderated e-forum of AIDS experts from across the region. It has 7,000 subscribers and postings are grouped by topic.

China links

The China AIDS Survey is an excellent introduction. It's got lots of links to both Chinese and international organisations working in the field, national and international news reports, chronologies charting the course of the AIDS epidemic, and a collection of official government statements and reports on the epidemic.

India links

A good starting point is the UNAIDS India page which gives an overview of the country's epidemic.

India's governmental National Aids Control Organisation website gives AIDS figures for each state, specialist reports, and a detailed outline of the government's response to the epidemic.

The Indian Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS has put together a good website which gives contact details for state networks, and a regular newsletter. Another place to go for issues affecting people living with AIDS is the Positive Women Network.

The World Bank's site has a full explanation of how the pandemic first emerged and spread, the current risk factors, and full details of the government's response since 1986.

Finally, the AIDS-INDIA eFORUM is a moderated e-forum with 4,000 subscribers, including many AIDS experts. Discussions are grouped by theme.
