CONFLICT HIGH IN THE HIMALAYAS
Human Rights Watch says systematic violations by all parties in Kashmir has been a critical factor in fuelling the violence. Its reports examine abuses by Indian security forces and militant groups. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Center has several reports on the background to the crisis and displaced populations and a very comprehensive list of sources and links. Two English-language papers in the region, The Daily Excelsior and The Kashmir Times have online versions carrying daily news and opinion pieces although they can be a little hard to follow if you're not from the region. The Kashmir Herald is an online news and opinion journal. It carries news from local and international sources, profiles of militant groups and a blog which also carries discussions on the war on terror. The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan was set up in 1949 after the first war. It has a brief history of the mission's involvement, the texts of four Security Council resolutions on Kashmir and a very detailed map. For a broad range of viewpoints, witness accounts, analysis and interviews try Kashmir Affairs which describes itself as an independent journal aiming to promote dialogue and understanding of the region, its politics, people and culture.
