The basics
Is my organisation an AlertNet member?
Visit our
directory for a full list of AlertNet member organisations.
What do you mean by "member"?
We mean non-governmental groups actively working in emergency relief who have actively joined AlertNet. In some cases we also mean staff of those agencies. Only staff of member organisations can log in to the site.
All information and AlertNet subscription services are publicly available on the site, but members need to log in for administrative privileges.
Is AlertNet taking on new members?
AlertNet membership is now open to national NGOs working in emergency relief. We are looking specifically to recruit new members from the global "south" in order to increase the number of grassroots, community organisations within our membership programme. We will remain committed to deepening the relationship with the current membership community while looking to widen our circle of national NGOs.
How do I apply to become an AlertNet member?
If you're interested in becoming an AlertNet member organisation please read our terms and conditions page which tells you about AlertNet's membership criteria. Once you've read these and are happy that your organisation fulfils our criteria, please get in touch via email on alertnet@reuters.com or call us on +44 (0)207 542 2432.
Logging in
How do I get a log-in for the site?
If you work for an AlertNet member organisation it's easy to get a log-in and start adding your material, just go to our registration page. All staff have to self-register as current members are unable to add or delete others.
If you encounter any problems, or if you need help cleaning up your organisation's user list, just email us.
Why do I need to get a log-in for the site?
A log-in allows you full administrative access to AlertNet. For Platinum members, that means being able to download free Reuters pictures for use in your emergency communications. All members with a log-in also get permission to add news and other material to the site.
By getting a log-in we'll also be able to keep in touch with you about new member initiatives and send updates to communications officers about new tools on the site.
Member benefits
What benefits does AlertNet offer its members?
AlertNet membership gives:
- Access to free Reuters pictures for use in emergency appeals
- Statistics charting your organisation's press mentions and access these press articles
- The ability to post articles, photos and jobs to the site
- Access to funding through AIDfund
- A direct line to journalists around the globe (especially through our weekly Heads Up email)
For more information, visit our "Member benefits" page.
What's the difference between Standard and Platinum members?
To be a Platinum member of AlertNet you need to update your entries in our Who Works Where database when prompted every four months. Platinum membership allows you to download Reuters pictures for free use in your communications, and access funding through AIDfund.
If you have any questions about how to update your entries, just email us.
Adding material
What kind of material does AlertNet want from NGOs?
We'd really like all our members to be posting the following kinds of material onto the site:
- News stories
- Blogs
- Features (case studies)
- Picture galleries
- Videos
- Maps and satellite images
- Jobs
How do I add material to the site?
Once you've got a log-in you can add all of the above material to the site (except blogs - please see below). The easiest way to post material is through the "Publish..." pull-down menu in the left-hand column. Visit our "How to publish" page if you need any more information.
What are the benefits of posting material onto AlertNet?
By posting to the site we can help you raise the profile of your work among the other aid workers, the general public, and journalists who regularly use the site. We can add your material into our Weekly Digest email which reaches 26,000 people, or alert journalists to the work you're doing through our weekly Humanitarian Heads Up email, received by over 2,000 journalists around the world.
How can I get a blog on AlertNet?
If you'd like to write a blog for AlertNet please read our blogging guidelines first. Once you've read those, just email us here to submit your posting or ask any questions about adding material to AlertNet.
Other questions
I need some photos for an appeal but I can't find anything relevant - who do I need to talk to?
