Geneva/Bangui (ICRC) – A Central African staff member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been killed. Moctar Chaib died in the north-eastern town of Birao.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of our friend and colleague Moctar, and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends," said Simon Ashmore, head of the ICRC's delegation in Bangui.

"This latest tragedy shows how dangerous it is for everyone in the area." The circumstances of the killing are not yet known.

Increasing tensions in the area over recent weeks and an attack on Birao on 6 June by a group of armed men have made it increasingly difficult for the ICRC and other humanitarian organizations to help people affected by recent clashes.

While few civilian casualties were reported following the attack, the ICRC is concerned that the escalating violence will take a heavy toll on the local population.

The ICRC has been present in Birao since 2007, coming to the aid of people affected by the conflict and helping them to become self-sufficient once again.
