Iran speaker urges reconsideration of Western ties

TEHRAN, June 21 (Reuters) - Iran's parliament speaker has called for ties with Britain, France and Germany to be reconsidered in view of their "shameful" statements on a disputed presidential election, state radio said on Sunday.

Speaker Ali Larijani made the comment in a speech to parliament, the report said.

"He called the stances of the United States, Britain, Germany and France towards Iran's presidential election shameful and called on parliament's foreign and security policy commission to put the reconsideration of ties with the three European countries on its agenda," it said.

The United States severed ties with Tehran after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution. U.S. President Barack Obama has been trying to reach out to the Islamic Republic since he took office in January.

Many Western countries have criticised the election and its aftermath. Iranian government officials reject opposition charges that the vote was rigged. (Reporting by Hashem Kalantari; Writing by Fredrik Dahl; Editing by Jon Hemming)
