GLOBAL: New mortality risk index

DUBAI, 16 June 2009 (IRIN) - Four big but also densely populated countries -
Bangladesh, China, India and Indonesia – are deemed to be in the "extreme" category in terms of the average number of citizens at risk of tropical cyclones, earthquakes, floods and landslides,
according to a new Mortality Risk Index http://www.preventionweb.net/files/9929_MRIA3.pdf launched on 16 June by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction. Colombia, Myanmar and
Pakistan come next, falling into the "major" category, while Afghanistan, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Iran, Japan, Peru, Philippines, Romania and Uzbekistan are rated "very
high". The index helps to identify multi/combined, relative and absolute risk by country, covering the four most common "sudden onset hazards" above. dvh/ar/cb© IRIN. All rights
